How are manmade glaciers made?
In decades past, farmers in India’s Ladakh region knew when meltwater from glaciers in the Himalayas would flow down toward their fields, where they set up irrigation systems to make use of that annual water supply. But as temperatures shift, they say it’s difficult to know when to plant their crops because they’re not sure when water will naturally be available. Manmade glaciers known as ice stupas have solved that problem for farmers in some villages.
