The puppets are commonly known as mono de calenda and marmotas. Because all events in Oaxaca have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Azcona and his fellow moneros have been out of work. “My puppets have just been here,” Azcona says. “They haven’t been able to go out onto the streets.”
