Harare, Zimbabwe

Sandra Mazviwanza collects water from a pipe that burst in Glenview 2, a neighborhood in Harare, Zimbabwe. Although three people from her neighborhood have died in Zimbabwe’s current outbreak of cholera, a water-borne disease, Mazviwanza says this is the only way she has had to gather water since the rupture of this pipe, which is connected to her house.

The performance by the dancers, based in the Villa del Parque neighborhood, was part of an event called Buenos Aires Celebra, during which the city celebrates the nation’s various cultural communities.

Rubavu District, Rwanda

Clementine Nikuze has transformed old tires into planters at her home in Rwanda’s Rubavu District. Nikuze, a mother of four, turned tire gardens into a business. Customers pay her 15,000 Rwandan francs (about $17) to come to their homes and install small tire gardens.

Every day for the past 35 years, Thangarasa Lingarasa (right), Thampu Thevarasa (center) and Rasaiah Pathmanathan (left) have gotten together to roll tobacco in Thirunelvely, a village in Sri Lanka’s Jaffna district. They make about 2,200 cigars per week, earning 1.80 Sri Lankan rupees (a little more than 1 U.S. cent) per cigar, so each man earns about 4,000 rupees (about $25) per week.
