Lusaka, Zambia

During the Pamodzi Carnival, a festival in Lusaka, Zambia, a Makishi dancer performs with a snake and a mask that represent ancestral spirits. At Pamodzi, which means “together” in the Chichewa language, cultural groups from the country’s 10 provinces gather to celebrate Zambia’s heritage.

Rubavu District, Rwanda

Clementine Nikuze has transformed old tires into planters at her home in Rwanda’s Rubavu District. Nikuze, a mother of four, turned tire gardens into a business. Customers pay her 15,000 Rwandan francs (about $17) to come to their homes and install small tire gardens.

Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo

Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo

Theo Bakoko, 20, who attends a technical secondary school, plays a game called “cadra” in Kisangani, a city in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The two-player game costs 200 Congolese francs (12 cents) to play and is popular among students during their summer vacation.

Goma, North Kivu, DRC

During school vacations, Nathalie Bahati, 10, learns sewing and tailoring from her mother, Francine Bushoke, a well-known seamstress in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. Nathalie, who has been sewing for two years, makes some of her own clothes and also sells garments at her mother’s workshop at the front of their home.

Sheema District, Uganda

Musimenta Frank (left) and Akobumosi Cosmas take bananas to the Kabwohe market in Uganda’s Sheema district. Four times a day, the duo make the 6-mile journey to transport the green bananas, known locally as “matoke,” from their garden in Masheruka to the market, and each of them earns about 70,000 Ugandan shillings ($18.76) per trip.

Komanda, Ituri Province, DRC

In Komanda village in Democratic Republic of Congo’s northeastern Ituri province, Georgette Mwasi, 42, repairs a jerrican using a heated metal tool and recycled plastics. Jerricans, which are important in the area for transporting and storing water, cost more than 5,000 Congolese francs ($3.10) each, while Mwasi charges only 300 francs (19 cents) to repair a broken one.

Harare, Zimbabwe

The ZCC Police Band kicked off the first Zimbabwe Peace Festival, in Harare on July 27. The event was created to pray for political tolerance and peace in the run-up to the July 30 general elections. Previous elections in Zimbabwe have been marred by widespread violence and accusations of corruption, so many Zimbabweans hope Monday's vote will be the first fair elections in more than a generation.

Bullet Kaitano cuts away excess paper as he binds a photocopied school textbook to sell on the street in Harare, Zimbabwe. Kaitano, who buys the original books from graduates, says that despite the illegality of copying textbooks to sell, his photocopied volumes are popular with schoolchildren who cannot afford to purchase new ones.

Sheema District, Uganda

Medad Kamukama harvests ripe coffee beans at his home garden in Uganda’s Sheema district. The beans turn from green to red when they are ready to harvest, which is usually from May to August. Kamukama gets 5,000 Ugandan shillings ($1.33) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of clean and dried coffee, and his crop is then exported to the European Union.

Shadrack Byukusenge, 8, draws water from the Sebeya River in Rugerero, a sector in Rwanda’s northwestern Rubavu district. After heavy rains blocked the pipes that carry water to his village of Rushubi, Shadrack walked 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) to retrieve water from the river.
