Global Press Enters a New Era

We’re moving into new countries, strengthening our coverage and training more women reporters than ever before.

Global Press Enters a New Era

Dear Global Press readers,

When Global Press was founded 18 years ago, its goal was to bring to light the many voices around the world that were missing from the mainstream media market by employing women reporters who would cover their own countries.

This is why I first joined Global Press in 2013. We’re proud to be a leader in creating jobs for local journalists who cover their own communities with dignity and precision.

Krista Karch, Global Press Editor-in-Chief

I recently returned to Global Press as Editor-in-Chief after a five-year hiatus. Though our goal remains the same, we’re living it out a little differently.

The world is changing, and so are we. Global Press wouldn’t serve our readers well if we remained the same. This change has challenged our news organization to move past old ways of thinking. But it also represents a new era – one in which Global Press journalism will move away from the edges of the mainstream media market and into the center square.

Global Press has operated for decades in remote, conflict-ridden and widely misunderstood places. We’ll continue to cover many of those places, but we’re adding new coverage countries, too. We’ll soon begin recruiting in Nigeria, Ukraine, Brazil and many other places, to enhance our deeply collaborative, interconnected global coverage.

We’ve updated our editorial strategy to emphasize investigative and explanatory global coverage in three core subject areas: civil liberties, global health and the environment. Our coverage will begin in the places where our reporters live, but will span out to connect the dots of local news with what’s happening globally.

"The world is changing, and so are we. Global Press wouldn’t serve our readers well if we remained the same."

There’s one more big change. We’re launching two-year, full-time reporting fellowships for women journalists in new coverage countries. These fellows will lead the news coverage we produce under our new model, all while getting advanced journalism training. In addition, we’ll continue to employ staff in our current coverage countries as reporters in residence. And we’re launching new certificate programs to train even more women journalists around the world to elevate expertise on topical coverage skills. Program graduates can join the GP Reporting Network to contribute to our global reporting. We remain committed, as always, to creating exceptional journalism jobs for women around the world.

We’re doing this for you, our readers. In the coming months, look for new newsletters and more ways to engage with our work. We’re so thankful for your support over the years. Keep us in your news feed, and spread the word about the journalism we publish. Join us as we continue to reimagine international news coverage.
