Global Press’ Shifting Democracies fellows will examine changing governance structures in countries around the world, and how those shifts are interconnected.

During this two-year, full-time fellowship, fellows will produce investigative and explanatory journalism, participate in advanced skills training and be part of an international cohort of women journalists, all working and living in their home countries.

Fellowships begin January 2025 and last until December 2026

The fellowship workload will require a 40-hour-per-week commitment

Fellows will work remotely and must be from and located in one of 15 eligible countries

Successful fellow candidates will:

✓ Identify as a woman

✓ Be from and currently live full-time in their coverage country for the duration of the 2-year fellowship

✓ Have at least five years of prior newsroom, reporting or related experience

✓ Have English language proficiency

✓ Be enthusiastic about learning new reporting and writing skills

✓ Have an understanding of civil liberties and how to cover related topics

✓ Be passionate about visual storytelling and have a desire to advance photojournalism skills

✓ Have basic technology skills and regular access to internet

Application process

All applicants will be required to submit:

  • A current, English-language resume.

  • A two-page (1,000 word) cover letter stating the gaps they see in coverage of how democracy is shifting in their country, and what role their journalism would play in filling those gaps.

  • A portfolio of three work samples with a brief explanation of an editor’s role in each.

  • Three photos they have taken either personally or professionally that demonstrate their photography experience and a brief description of each.

Frequently asked questions

QUALIFICATIONS

Can I apply if I am a transwoman?
Yes, all women are eligible to apply for this reporting fellowship.

Is there an age limit?
Anyone over the age of 18 can apply.

I am from one of the 15 coverage countries but do not currently live there. Am I eligible for this fellowship?
Reporters must live in one of the coverage countries during the duration of the fellowship.

What educational qualifications do I need to have?
There are no educational requirements for reporting fellows. Higher education, professional certification completion or equivalent experience in journalism, communications or a subject related to relevant reporting topics (ie, political science) is preferred.

What if I don’t have photojournalism experience?
Candidates are not required to have previous professional photojournalism experience. However, successful candidates will have a deep interest in learning photojournalism and ensuring their stories are supported by robust visual assets. Fellows who are hired are expected to have or purchase a camera as part of the tech requirements of the program.

What if I speak English, but don’t feel comfortable writing in English?
Global Press is a multilingual workplace with a long-standing commitment to creating opportunities for non-English speaking reporters. For this first fellowship program, we require that all fellows have English proficiency to fully participate in the program and communicate with their cohort and editors. Fellows may write news stories in their local language, with the support of translators and editors through the process.

FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE

When will the fellowship program start?
Selected Fellows will be notified by December 20. The fellowship will begin on January 10, 2025.

How many hours a week will I work as a reporting fellow?
Reporting Fellows are expected to work full-time at 40 hours per week.

What if I have a job in another newsroom?
This is a full-time fellowship that will require full commitment from participants. From time in training and ongoing learning opportunities to producing investigative coverage for local and international audiences, this fellowship requires full focus.

Will I be producing content focused on the theme of Shifting Democracies?
Yes, this fellowship is designed to bolster expertise in understanding changing governments, investigating and explaining those changes in the context of your own country and other global trends.

Where will the content I produce be read?
Everything you produce will be published in a Global Press Journal product, in English. Those products include globalpressjournal.com, our primary publication, and topical newsletters sent to a specific target audience.

Local language versions of stories will be made available to local media outlets in your country for republication. Stories are syndicated to a wide network of online, print and radio partners across the world.

What technology will I need?
Fellows selected for the program will need a working computer, camera and an audio recorder. Global Press will provide all semi-finalist candidates with a list of required specs for computers and cameras. Fellows who require assistance in purchasing technology may apply for a technology scholarship.

APPLICATION & INTERVIEW PROCESS

How will I know if I am selected for the program?
Applicants who are moving forward in the interview process will receive an email from Global Press letting them know. The final, selected fellows will be notified by December 20.

PAY & BENEFITS

Is this a paid fellowship?
Fellows receive up to $30,000 USD per calendar year, paid in monthly installments via bank transfer.

What additional benefits are provided during the fellowship?
Global Press offers acute incident support, counseling and ongoing wellness workshops to help fellows navigate some of the risks and challenges that come along with being a local reporter for an international news outlet. Fellows receive a regional benefits package, including time off, during the two-year fellowship.
